Fort Pulaski National Monument sits just a short drive from the docks where our Daytime Dolphin Tour begins, guarding the mouth of the Savannah River where freshwater meets the Atlantic. This historic Civil War fortress, famous for the 1862 battle that revolutionized military strategy with rifled cannons, occupies Cockspur Island in the same coastal waterways where bottlenose dolphins thrive year round. The brackish marshes, tidal creeks, and shipping channels surrounding Fort Pulaski National Monument create the perfect ecosystem for dolphins, making this stretch of the Georgia coast one of the most reliable places in the Southeast to see them in their natural habitat.
As you cruise along the river on the Daytime Dolphin Tour, you will glide past the very waters that frame Fort Pulaski National Monument, with views of the old brick ramparts rising from the marsh grass and the lighthouse beacon of Cockspur Island standing watch nearby. The captain narrates the maritime history of the area while pods of dolphins surface alongside the boat, their dorsal fins cutting through the green tinted water. You will feel the salt breeze, hear the cries of laughing gulls overhead, and catch glimpses of herons stalking the shallows along the edges of the monument grounds. The combination of dolphin sightings, sweeping marsh views, and the historic silhouette of Fort Pulaski creates a layered experience that few other coastal tours can match.
This tour is perfect for families with curious kids, couples looking for a relaxed afternoon on the water, history lovers who want to see Fort Pulaski National Monument from a fresh angle, and anyone who finds joy in watching wildlife up close. Photographers will appreciate the chance to frame dolphins against the backdrop of the fort, and travelers exploring Tybee Island and Savannah will gain a richer sense of how the river, the marsh, and the monument all connect. Whether you come for the dolphins, the scenery, or the stories of Fort Pulaski National Monument, you leave with a deeper appreciation for this remarkable corner of the Georgia coast.
With an exceptional track record, this dolphin tour delivers what matters most: plenty of active dolphins and a genuinely entertaining crew. Guides like Captain Derek, Kim, Matt, Chelsea, and Gator get consistent shout-outs for being funny, knowledgeable, and professional. Many guests report seeing dolphins within minutes of departure, often swimming right alongside the boat, and the sunset cruises come with beautiful views and a well-curated music playlist. The operation runs smoothly, with punctual departures, easy boarding, and boats that don't feel overcrowded. Families with kids have a blast, and even large groups like Girl Scouts and school trips report excellent experiences. One reviewer noted that shorter guests and those who board later might struggle with viewing angles when dolphins appear on the opposite side, but this seems to be the exception rather than the norm. The overwhelming consensus is that this is a highlight of any Tybee Island visit, with some guests loving it enough to book twice.
Great experience. A few things to note that I wish we would have known.. get there early, like actually. Parking was pretty full, we had to park far… your sandals will get sandy from the walk! We got there 10 mins before boarding and we were the last group to get on the third boat. Which is fine, but it was a lot of waiting for the kids. They have you get a laminated boarding pass at a check in window.. so plan to wait in line for that … you don’t use e-tickets. It also means we got last preference for seating .. which was front of the boat without shade. If you sit in the front, plan for a hat or visor. We wanted the front of the ship, but you may not. Snacks are pre-board not on board. I also am unsure if there is a bathroom on board. I’m sure there is, they just never announced it. They had portable bathrooms before boarding but were out of water to wash your hands. The tour was cool.. we didn’t get super close to the dolphins like we have gotten on tours in the past. But it was still a great experience!
