The Monterey Bay Aquarium sits right along Cannery Row, perched at the edge of one of the most biologically rich stretches of coastline in North America. Exploring Monterey with a talking GoCar makes reaching the Monterey Bay Aquarium effortless, as the little yellow convertible navigates the waterfront streets while narrating the stories behind the sardine canneries, the bay, and the marine sanctuary that inspired the aquarium itself. Long before it became a world-renowned destination, this stretch of shoreline was the beating heart of John Steinbeck's Cannery Row, and the GoCar brings that history alive as you roll toward the aquarium's iconic doors.
Pulling up near the Monterey Bay Aquarium, you'll catch the salty breeze rolling off the Pacific and hear the bark of sea lions echoing along the rocks below. The talking GoCar guides you through the surrounding neighborhood with GPS-triggered commentary, pointing out landmarks, hidden viewpoints, and the best spots to pause for photos of the kelp-tangled coastline that the Monterey Bay Aquarium is famous for showcasing. The freedom of the self-drive format means you can linger as long as you like near the aquarium, then continue on toward Fisherman's Wharf, Lovers Point, or the 17-Mile Drive at your own pace.
This experience is ideal for couples, families, and curious travelers who want the flexibility of a private tour without a fixed schedule. Anyone planning a visit to the Monterey Bay Aquarium will appreciate how the GoCar weaves together the cultural, historical, and coastal context that makes the aquarium's location so meaningful. By the time you park near the Monterey Bay Aquarium, you'll already feel connected to the bay, the town, and the marine world waiting just inside.
Reviewers consistently rave about how fun and unique this Monterey experience is, with many calling it a highlight of their trip. The GPS-guided tour gets high marks for being both entertaining and informative, helping visitors learn about historic sites while exploring the stunning coastline at their own pace. Staff members, particularly Alex, earn enthusiastic praise for thorough safety explanations and helpful route recommendations that make first-timers feel confident behind the wheel. The three-wheeled vehicles do take a few blocks to get comfortable with (some note you'll want basic motorcycle knowledge), but most find them easy to handle once you get the feel. Guests appreciate being able to pull over near the harbor for photos and enjoying the views on their own schedule. One reviewer mentioned the ride feeling loud and bumpy, but this appears to be an outlier among otherwise glowing feedback. Tours range from one to three hours, with longer options giving you more time to explore Carmel and the greater peninsula. Locals and visitors alike recommend adding this to your bucket list for a memorable way to see the area.
