Homer, Kevin, Harry, Jeff, and Carl have built something special on the Snake River, and travelers consistently rave about the personalized attention and professional operation. The guides are praised for their knowledge of the area, exceptional boatsmanship, and ability to create memorable experiences whether you're fishing for bass and sturgeon, taking a sunset dinner cruise, or getting a jetback shuttle from multi-day rafting trips. The food gets particular shoutouts, especially the BBQ ribs served at the dam, and guests love that these tours feel intimate rather than cramped onto crowded barges. Most visitors describe thrilling yet safe adventures through stunning Hells Canyon scenery, spotting bighorn sheep and eagles along the way. The crew adapts to conditions and goes out of their way to ensure everyone has a great time, from helping kids catch fish to sharing local stories. One reviewer had a frustrating experience with disorganization and communication problems around scheduling, but this seems to be an isolated incident in an otherwise overwhelmingly positive track record. Families, repeat visitors, and large private groups all seem to leave with stories they can't wait to share.
The staff at Hammer Down were helpful in arranging a private charter for two people. Captain Harry knows the Salmon river provided a first rate trip with attention to his guests and numerous stops at a variety of fishing holes. When we caught a sturgeon, he was responsible with the care of the fish allowing us to be up close and personal with the fish, measure and take pictures while keeping the monster fish safe. He not only provided a fishing trip but also a scenic day on the water with some rapids.
