Rocky Bottom's lobster tours have hit on something special. The crew—names like Steve, Jason, John, and Grace come up frequently—are working lobstermen who genuinely love sharing their craft. They'll pull up traps, teach you to measure and sex lobsters, explain the conservation practices that keep the industry thriving, and answer every question like they have all day. Guests consistently mention how relaxed and down-to-earth the atmosphere feels, with comfortable seating, blankets, and even sunset tours available for a more intimate experience. The hands-on element is a big draw. You can choose your level of involvement, from simply observing to handling lobsters and crabs yourself, helping bait traps, and posing for photos. Families with kids and teens seem to have particularly great experiences, and the scenic coastal views of Casco Bay add another layer to the trip. These are last-minute bookable tours that visitors routinely call the highlight of their Portland visit. The flexibility is notable too—they've rescheduled for weather to ensure guests get the best experience possible.
My boyfriend and I took a tour last October and it was one of the best experiences we had while in Maine. The crew were very knowledgeable and everyone got a turn to hold a lobster and drive the boat if they wanted. I even helped bait some of the traps. We were told that there might not be many lobsters due to the season, but we were able to catch a decent amount. Very neat experience and I would recommend this company to anyone!
