Billys Stone Crab: 1 Collany Rd, Tierra Verde, FL 33715
Shell Key Preserve is one of the largest undeveloped barrier islands along Florida's Gulf Coast, a 1,800-acre sanctuary just off the shoreline of Tierra Verde near St. Petersburg. Protected for its critical habitat value, Shell Key Preserve is a haven for nesting shorebirds, sea turtles, dolphins, manatees, and a kaleidoscope of marine life that thrives in its shallow seagrass flats and mangrove channels. Paddling here in a transparent kayak transforms the experience entirely, turning the water beneath you into a living window onto the preserve's quiet wilderness.
The clear kayak tour glides through the calm, sheltered waters that ring Shell Key Preserve, where the Gulf's turquoise shallows reveal sandy bottoms, drifting rays, schools of silvery fish, and the occasional curious dolphin. Your guide shares the natural and ecological story of Shell Key Preserve as you paddle, pointing out wading birds tucked into the mangroves, ospreys overhead, and the subtle signs of the preserve's protected zones. Unlike busier stretches of Tampa Bay coastline, the waters around Shell Key Preserve feel hushed and uncrowded, with only the soft splash of paddles and the call of seabirds breaking the stillness. The clear hull adds a gentle thrill, every glance down brings a new detail of the seafloor into view.
This experience is ideal for couples chasing a romantic morning on the water, families with curious kids who light up at the sight of fish swimming beneath their seat, photographers, and nature lovers who want a low-impact way to connect with Florida's wild side. Beginners are welcomed warmly, the protected waters around Shell Key Preserve are forgiving and easy to navigate, and the guide keeps the pace relaxed. If you want to trade crowded beaches for a quieter, more intimate slice of the Gulf, a clear kayak tour through Shell Key Preserve is the kind of unhurried adventure you will be talking about long after you have dried off.

We did the clear kayak adventure this morning with Ava and she was a delight and extremely knowledgeable along the way! Shell Key Preserve was beautiful, we were able to get out and gather shells and walk around the beach. Touring the mangrove was a cool experience as well. Overall, this was a fun excursion with a super awesome guide!
